Branding Yourself Strategically
In this economy, finding a new job, gaining recognition in your current one, acquiring new clients, and selling a business proposition can be challenging. In this course, we will explore how students can think strategically about their uniqueness and how to communicate it. The key is the development of a personal brand. This means knowing how to craft a personal story and package one’s self. And interestingly, how people “distribute” or convey their personal brand through various media channels is almost as important as creating the brand itself.

Through short lectures, small group activities and guest speakers, we will look at building a personal brand both offline as well as online. By the end of the course, students will know how to brand themselves in face-to-face meetings and how to use Web 2.0 media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and more) to make a lasting personal and professional impression.

SD Forum Book Talks

November 19, 2008

7:30am – 9:30am

THEY MADE IT!

Great leaders have been the stuff of many business books over the years. However, few books have focused uniquely on foreign-born entrepreneurs and executives, specifically ones living and working in Silicon Valley.

The book, They Made It!, is the result of conversations with these foreign-born Silicon Valley entrepreneurs such as Eric Benhamou, Jean-Louis Gassee, Raj Singh, Wu Fu Chen, Suhas Patil, Omid Kordestani, Qi Lu, Dan Maydan, who tell it as it is.

Each leader shares a unique, personal story of how s/he came to the US and ultimately made it. As we all know by now, there is no “secret sauce, no clear roadmap on how to succeed.” But there are a number of “recipes for success” with specific ingredients that if applied, may smooth the path upward.

The recipes include addressing how to stand out from the crowd, how to achieve excellence, how to push yourself and be daring. If you are established in Silicon Valley, or if you are just curious to find out what makes these extraordinary individuals tick, come listen to how these foreign-born professionals think and gain personal insight into the fulfillment of their ambitions and dreams.

You will:

• gain insight into the way leaders from different countries and cultures act and think

• understand cultural differences and what influences these differences can have

• get to know leading entrepreneurs from a more personal, approachable side

• hear the individual voices speak about their own development – what did they have to face, what obstacles did they overcome?

Interviewing for Success

Interviewing is a vital communication skill for most professionals, one that is both an art and a science. Whether you are interviewing for a new job or simply dealing with a heavy load of informal interviews in your current position, this course will help you think through the interviewing process, develop interpersonal dynamic skills, and understand the hidden agendas of both interviewer and interviewee. We will cover various types of interviews—from broad, information-gathering interviews to narrow, fact-checking interviews, while paying particular attention to job interviews, including phone and panel interviews.

We will also look at storytelling as an essential component of interviewing and will help you craft your own “story,” one that can turn an ordinary exchange into a memorable conversation. This hands-on workshop will help you understand how to present yourself with integrity in a way that stands out. Each student will be videotaped and will receive personalized feedback.

American Forms of Communication:

Is What You Hear Really What You Get?

GABA Women in Business

WHEN AND WHERE
Monday, November 10, 2008, 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Cooley Godward Kronish LLP

3175 Hanover Street
Palo Alto, CA 94306

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

Many people who come from overseas to the US to work think they understand how Americans speak and, in turn, how to speak to them. However, uniquely American forms of business communications are more complex than is first evident.

In this session, we will review how to recognize some of the nuances to watch out for in US business communication, and whether what you hear is really what you get. In addition, we will address how international businesswomen can identify what tone to use in work-related discussions and team briefings. Discussion and group exercises will make this an interactive and lively event.

Join fellow women professionals for the fourth of a series of casual wine and cheese mixers for GABA members and their guests, to discuss professional growth, successes, roles for women working in the Bay Area, and other workforce topics. Please bring YOUR story to share with the group during open discussion.

Discussion featuring:

* Angelika Blendstrup, Ph.D., Professional Business Communications

The purpose of these events, together with the GABA WIB Listserv (GABA_WIB- ), are to further the discussion, support and solutions between women who work in any industry or business, building a community professional and personal development.

June 16, 2004: Silicom Synergy Meeting

Guest Speaker: Angelika Blendstrup, Ph.D.

Topic:

“How to say Shalom in English” – cultural differences between
Americans and Israelis and the unique culture of the Silicon Valley.

Member Speaker:
Doron Ohel, member of Silicom Synergy and a local attorney, will speak about “The Legal Aspects in Choosing the Right Business Entity for Your Start-Up Company”.

Silicom Synergy’s mission is to provide a vibrant networking environment for young (25-38 yo) Jewish and Israeli professionals from different industries. The idea for the group was modeled after the very successful Silicom Ventures group, one of the largest and most active investor groups in the Silicon Valley (www.silicomventures.com). The goal of Silicom Synergy is to provide an environment where professionals can meet to extend their networks, learn more about the intricacies of business success stories and gain access to mentoring from successful entrepreneurs, investors and executives.

A thank you letter…

Angelika,

I wanted to write you a personal thank you letter.

I enjoyed your great presentation last night and our interaction over the past weeks. I thought you smartly introduced a great tool to use in order to consider your business partners, when operating in a multicultural business environment. I loved the matrix
with questions and the way you lead us through it.

It was refreshing to have an exercise that made us think for a change. It makes all the difference when you get to the conclusion yourself! It was great!

I got very good feedbacks from our group members. Most people were sorry we didn’t have time to hear more from you. They thought it was too short. That is our fault of course, but we do try to keep our meetings to a limited time. Maybe in the future we will be able to offer more thorough seminars…

I do hope that you will come back to visit us when you have time. I will keep you posted on our next meetings.

I also hope that you had a good experience. Personally, I think that Israelis are a tough audience, especially when they are amongst themselves. I thought it was great that you were able to make us laugh and learn at the same time.

I am sorry that I could not spend some more time with you before the presentation. We are one board member short so each one of us had to take on some more responsibilities. I was glad to hear that you found some French speakers to chat with ;-) . I envy you for your ability to communicate with so many cultures in so many languages and for bridging the gap between people. I think it is a great job!

Thank you again and please keep in touch,

Orit Vidas-Horovitz
