I am passionate about multiculturalism, about being in a city [Palo Alto] and area [Silicon Valley] where you see 20 different nationalities and cultures in 10 minutes sitting outside of Starbucks or Pete’s or walking around Stanford Shopping Center. And everyone thinks this is normal.

 

I work with foreign professionals in the Silicon Valley who want to be understood better [English/accent reduction], and be effective leaders in their companies. The only things holding them back are their difficult to understand accents and their often too convoluted presentations. However, some want to be able to share jokes with colleagues and have them laugh, they want to better understand what is going on in the group – where nobody looks at them and thinks that they are different.

 

After about 8 – 10 weeks of training, they sound good [ lots of concentrated, hard work and practice], they realize that their accent is part of the scene here, their communications have taken an upswing and life looks good.

What makes me happy?

 

Being co-president of InterFrench [SiliconFrench], putting on an event with 5 partner groups and seeing 200+ business professionals networking in a law office (often Cooley Godward or Pillsbury Winthrop), all from different parts of the world – China, India, US, Germany, France, Latin America.

She has published a book, They Made It! in which 38 international and five US executives from the Silicon Valley (and the greater US) speak about their lives, what led them here and how they have contributed to the high tech industry in the Valley, the US and overseas.
Another book, Communicating the American Way, co-authored with Elisabetta Ghisini, will also be published shortly.

 

Angelika has lived in Brazil, France, Germany and traveled in many Spanish-speaking countries; her clients come from Europe, Asia, Latin American, as well as the Middle East. In addition to English, Angelika speaks French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

 

Angelika holds a Ph.D. in Bilingual, Bicultural Education from Stanford University, a Master’s Degree in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Languages and Educational Psychology from the University of Tübingen, Germany.

 

Angelika is active in the Silicon Valley community; she is the Co-President of InterFrench/SiliconFrench.
She currently belongs or has belonged to organizations such as the Junior League Mid Peninsula, The Peninsula Executive Association and the University Rotary Club of Palo Alto.
She has volunteered at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital and is on the Advisory Board of Bloofusion.
